Heavy eyelids and under-eye bags are two of the earliest hallmarks of aging. An upper or lower eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can immediately create a refreshed, more youthful appearance with virtually no visible scarring. Today’s eyelifts are minimally invasive, and incisions are hidden either inside the eyelids or in the creases. You may get upper or lower eyelid surgery, or both.
Aging of the upper eyelids often appears as excess skin overhanging the eyelids and volume loss beneath the brows and upper eyelids, revealing bulging pads around the eyes.
Dr. Roy begins upper eyelid surgery by making an incision concealed within the eyelid’s natural crease. He then carefully removes a strip of excess skin, resulting in a more youthful appearance. He can also perform targeted fat removal through the same incision. He may also tighten underlying tissue to produce optimal results. Sometimes, a lateral brow lift may be necessary to address lateral upper eyelid hooding caused by a drooping brow.
The delicate skin of the lower eyelids can become crepey as we age. Coupled with volume loss around the bony orbital rim and the upper cheek, and with bulging fat pads, the changes create a tired, aged appearance. Dr. Roy’s technique for lower eyelid surgery depends on your specific concerns and goals.
He often makes incisions inside the eyelids, called the transconjunctival method, as part of his advanced lower blepharoplasty trifecta technique. This approach completely conceals the scars, and the incisions heal quickly. If you have significant excess lower eyelid skin, Dr. Roy makes incisions just below the lash line. At the same time, he can remove or reposition fat or add it using fat transfer.
Candidates for eyelid surgery range from younger patients in their 20s to 40s who have a family history of early eyelid hooding or bags, to older patients experiencing typical aging changes around their eyes. Most women and men begin considering eyelid surgery after reaching age 40. In some cases, upper eyelid surgery is covered by your insurance if sagging skin and excess fat interfere with your vision.
Dr. Roy performs both upper and lower eyelid surgery as outpatient procedures. Upper blepharoplasty is typically done using a local anesthetic with mild sedation. Lower eyelid surgery usually requires IV sedation but not a general anesthetic. The procedure may be combined with laser skin resurfacing to minimize wrinkles under the eyes. Dermal filler injections are another complementary treatment that reduces the appearance of dark circles and undereye hollows.
Eyelid surgery recovery typically takes about 1 to 2 weeks for most swelling and bruising to fade, with final results continuing to refine over several months. Most patients can resume their regular routines after about a week. You can start light exercise after about 2 weeks. Initial discomfort, swelling, and bruising can be managed with lubricating ointment and cold compresses.
