Moles are usually brown, but can also be a variety of pinks, reds, and even black. The mole’s color doesn’t really matter as long as it’s consistent throughout. Nobody can do a complete mole check on themselves since you need to check your back and scalp. That’s why annual skin exams are so important.

Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Steven Swengel specializes in skin cancer, and his expert team performs thorough body checks looking for suspicious moles and lesions. Self-exams are a great supplement between annual or bi-annual office mole checks. Potentially dangerous moles might have one or more of the ABCDEs: Asymmetry, border irregularity, color that isn’t uniform, a diameter bigger than the size of a pencil eraser, or an evolving color, shape, or size.
If you do have a suspicious mole, the first step is a biopsy with Mohs surgery. This is the most effective form of skin biopsy that ensures minimal scarring and a single office visit. The mole is removed and immediately checked by our in-office lab to ensure all borders are clear. If they aren’t, a tiny additional sliver is removed. This process continues until the biopsy gets an “all clear” and patients aren’t stuck with a bigger scar than necessary or with multiple office visits. Mo’ moles, Mohs problem, anyone?

A payment receipt along with a super bill will be provided following your appointment, which you can use to seek possible reimbursement from your insurance provider.
