06 Feb My First Lip Fillers
A lot of women and men have thought about getting lip fillers, and it’s become an increasingly popular cosmetic procedure. I picked Restylane because it was recommended to me as a good choice for those who liked the shape of their lips but wanted them a little fuller. Considering the relative subtlety of this filler, it is also a good fit for many first-timers like me.
Restylane is safely metabolized in the body within six to nine months, making it nowhere near permanent, but it also lasts long enough to feel like you “got your money’s worth.” Plus, hyaluronic acid is included in a lot of skin serums, so it was a comfortable ingredient for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of discomfort, but the actual process was quick and easy. A topical numbing cream was used to make the process pretty painless. A tiny needle is injected into the top layer of the lip skin. Next, the filler is quickly injected as the needle is withdrawn.
This isn’t to say that I didn’t feel the injection at all, but it was very bearable. However, the needle does need to be somewhat “dragged” in order to correctly disperse the filler. That’s the peak of the discomfort, but it’s not any more uncomfortable than a vaccination. Still, I have friends who have had lip injections with no numbing cream—that isn’t an experience I’d be quick to sign up for.
Due to my lip shape and goals, I received more filler in my upper lip and less on the bottom. The entire procedure lasted about ten minutes. Unfortunately, I didn’t see accurate results right away because there was some swelling. About one hour after the procedure, the swelling was (in my opinion) pretty intense and had me worried. If this happens to you, don’t be alarmed. It’s normal and should reduce within two days. After four months, the fullness has started to subside, but my lips are still much fuller than before. I plan to schedule my maintenance filler soon and might even go a little plumper this time.
