Moles are usually brown, but can also be a variety of pinks, reds, and even black. The mole’s color doesn’t really matter as long as it’s consistent throughout. Nobody can do a complete mole check on themselves since you need to check your back and scalp. That’s why annual skin exams are so important.

Self-exams are a great supplement between annual or bi-annual office mole checks. Potentially dangerous moles might have one or more of the ABCDEs: Asymmetry, border irregularity, color that isn’t uniform, a diameter bigger than the size of a pencil eraser, or an evolving color, shape, or size.
If you do have a suspicious mole, the first step is a biopsy with Mohs surgery. This is the most effective form of skin biopsy that ensures minimal scarring and a single office visit. The mole is removed and immediately checked by our in-office lab to ensure all borders are clear. If they aren’t, a tiny additional sliver is removed. This process continues until the biopsy gets an “all clear” and patients aren’t stuck with a bigger scar than necessary or with multiple office visits. Mo’ moles, Mohs problem, anyone?

A payment receipt along with a super bill will be provided following your appointment, which you can use to seek possible reimbursement from your insurance provider.
