Rhinoplasty

Our bones stop growing once we reach adulthood, but cartilage—found in the nose and ears—continues to grow throughout our lives. That’s why a person’s nose can look much different throughout the years. Rhinoplasty, otherwise known as a “nose job,” can dramatically improve a person’s appearance, especially when the cartilage has grown to a point that makes your face look asymmetrical. Even though few people would say the first thing they notice about a person is their nose, modifying it for the better can create a big change, skyrocketing a person’s self-confidence, self-image, and improving the aesthetic and balance of their entire face.

Rhinoplasty can dramatically improve a person’s appearance, especially when the cartilage has grown to a point that makes your face look asymmetrical.

Rhinoplasty is rarely thought of as an anti-aging procedure, but that’s exactly what it can be. Whether you’ve been thinking about a nose job because you’ve never loved the shape of your nose or because it has changed too much as you’ve become older, rhinoplasty can give you the aesthetic and confidence you deserve. This surgery can also enhance a person’s other facial features, highlighting their eyes or mouth. However, because rhinoplasty is such a complex surgery, it’s critical that you only trust the absolute best with this procedure. Double board certified Dr. Sudeep Roy has undergone extensive, additional training in Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery) as well as Facial Plastic Surgery. He’s committed to providing you with the results you want and is an expert at retaining a person’s unique features that make them them. You won’t look like a different person after rhinoplasty by Dr. Roy. You’ll look like the best version of yourself.

During your rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Roy, you’ll get to see a preview of the results you can expect thanks to 3D imaging. This allows you to customize your results and better discuss your goals. You can also combine rhinoplasty with complementary surgical and non-surgical treatments for optimum results. RefinedMD offers a holistic approach and works alongside premium plastic surgeons like Dr. Roy to give patients the best aesthetic “one-stop” experience. Revision Rhinoplasty

Not all surgeons—and rhinoplasty surgeries—are created equally. Dr. Roy regularly “fixes” prior rhinoplasty procedures that did not turn out as expected or were damaged by trauma. If you’re unhappy with your current rhinoplasty results, you don’t have to settle. Dr. Roy will work with you to discuss options and is committed to giving you the results you want and deserve.

Revision rhinoplasty can often include adding dimensions instead of strictly removing cartilage and bone. There are a few options for this process, and the results look completely natural. Unfortunately, sometimes surgeries fail or are damaged. That’s why it’s so important to trust only the best rhinoplasty surgeon with one of the most important features on your face.

How Rhinoplasty Works

Whenever possible, Dr. Roy prefers endonasal rhinoplasty techniques, which require only internal incisions so that you never have a visible scar. However, most patients are better candidates for an “open approach,” which requires a small, single external incision. This is especially true when contouring of the nose tip is desired. The open approach incision scar is very small and easy to hide, and opting for an open approach decreases the risk of future revision surgery.

Both the bone and cartilage may be contoured and sculpted into your special, ideal shape. The skin is also re-draped. Most rhinoplasty procedures take 2 – 4 hours, but this can vary depending on the degree of contouring that needs to take place.

Rhinoplasty FAQs

Where is the Rhinoplasty procedure performed?

Dr. Roy performs his elective procedures at a private, outpatient surgical center certified by the AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities).

What kind of anesthesia is involved for the Rhinoplasty procedure?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia, which is administered by experienced, board-certified Anesthesiologists.

How long is the Rhinoplasty procedure?

Rhinoplasty typically takes 3-4 hours to perform, depending on the specific procedure planned. During your consultation with Dr. Roy, he will explain the benefits and disadvantages of the various techniques and approaches used for Rhinoplasty and guide you to the procedure that best suits your needs.

Does Rhinoplasty involve incisions, and if so, scars?

Closed-approach Rhinoplasty involves incisions on the inside of the nose, and is classically utilized by Dr. Roy for minor cosmetic alterations. Open-approach Rhinoplasty is more commonly performed for more significant alterations, especially if involving the tip of the nose. In these cases, a small incision across the columella is used to allow for better exposure of the nasal anatomy and more precise changes. Occasionally, an alar base reduction may be required to narrow the base of the nose or to reduce nostril flare. These require external incisions around the lower edge of the nostrils. In the majority of patients, these incisions heal beautifully and become virtually undetectable over time.

Is Rhinoplasty a painful procedure?

Rhinoplasty is associated with some mild discomfort during the first week after surgery, but is generally not a painful procedure, especially if performed with immaculate attention to the small details. Dr. Roy utilizes several techniques to minimize discomfort in the post-operative period, which he discusses with you during the consultation. Pain medication is provided after surgery, but patients usually switch to an over-the-counter alternative within 3-4 days.

How long is recovery after a Rhinoplasty procedure?

Patients usually have a malleable, aluminum splint on the top of their nose as well as some non-absorbable sutures that are removed 1 week following surgery. Most patients feel like they have a pretty bad cold for about 1 week. Most of the bruising and swelling associated with the procedure subside after 7-10 days, which is when the majority of patients are considered “socially” recovered. Some level of bruising and swelling can persist beyond this point.

When Rhinoplasty Is A Good Choice For Your Body

It’s common with surgery for patients to come to a consultation with a photo of a celebrity with the “perfect nose.” However, there’s no such thing. Halle Berry’s nose might be ideal for her, but not necessarily for you. The 3D imaging software helps you see exactly what potential noses might look like, and is a fantastic tool in showing patients why Dr. Roy recommends certain approaches to your rhinoplasty.

Your unique nose is a part of you. While some patients benefit from modifying their nose to make it more balanced with the face and aesthetically pleasing, nobody looks good with a cookie-cutter nose. Your nose needs to complement the rest of your features, and understanding how to achieve this is part of what makes Dr. Roy’s results so fantastic.

Some patients have thicker cartilage than others or broader or narrower bone structure than others. That’s part of your one of a kind quality, and working with various types of noses may require specialized techniques. Dr. Roy is trained in maintaining the inherent quality of every person’s nose while flawlessly making it the best it can be.

Rhinoplasty could be the answer if you think your nose makes your face look unbalanced, have never liked your nose, or think your nose has changed as you have aged (it has!). If you are not loving the latest edition of your nose, rhinoplasty might be for you.

Anesthesia and Recovery with Rhinoplasty

Since rhinoplasty involves a component of our airway, general anesthesia is used. However, minor rhinoplasty surgeries may only require IV sedation. Every person—and nose—is one of a kind, and Dr. Roy ensures that every patient is comfortable and pain-free during their procedure.

Rhinoplasty recovery requires the patient to wear splints and sutures for one week post-surgery. After two weeks, low-impact activities can be resumed, including heavy lifting and cycling. High-impact activities, like running and tennis, are an option three weeks post-surgery. Dodgeball, or other activities that could send a flying object towards your nose, should be avoided for 6 weeks! Patients often experience minor bruising and swelling, which subsides after the first two weeks. However, very minor swelling can persist for up to one year after surgery. Your results will still look incredible after just two weeks, but keep in mind they may continue to slowly improve for up to 12 months. Usually, “full” results are visible between 6 – 12 weeks after the surgery.

One of the most common questions patients ask is, “How long until I can get back to my daily routine?” This depends on person to person. Most patients return to work after 1 – 2 weeks. It’s vital to protect the nose for several weeks after surgery to maintain results during the healing process.

Maximize Rhinoplasty with Complementary Procedures

Your nose is one of the most obvious parts of your face that can cause asymmetry. However, since nobody’s face is perfectly symmetrical, you may benefit from further increasing facial balance with chin or cheek implants, lip surgery, or ear surgery. Chin and cheek implants can help a person look younger by permanently restoring lost volume or creating definition that was never there due to genetics. The perfect nose for you deserves the perfect chin and cheeks. Lip reduction surgery or a lip lift can also enhance facial balance, particularly if your lips are overly full or your two lips are too dramatically different in size.

Ears, much like the nose, are also largely made up of cartilage and can continue to grow throughout your life. Pinning the ears helps to restore balance if the cartilage protrudes too far away from the head. However, the ear also has a second issue caused by aging: Earlobes can become enlarged due to gravity and wearing heavy earrings. An earlobe reduction surgery is often a fantastic complement to rhinoplasty, and as a bonus, it is a very fast procedure with easy healing.

Non-surgical Pairings for Rhinoplasty

A lot of patients choose to pair non-surgical treatments with rhinoplasty, particularly if one of their primary goals is to look younger, healthier, and fresher. RefinedMD features several treatments for anti-aging including microneedling and dermal fillers to restore volume lost to aging. Dermal fillers can also be used to perform “liquid Rhinoplasties” so that patients can “shop” changes to their nose without undergoing a more involved procedure.
